High potential and gifted education

Some students learn quickly or show strong abilities in areas like creativity, thinking, leadership or sport. At our school, we recognise these strengths early and provide lessons and activities that help advanced learners grow, stay challenged and feel inspired.

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how we support students with advanced learning needs. At John Hunter Hospital School, we use effective strategies, such as cultural incursions, wellbeing programs, tailored lessons, music and art therapy, personalised projects and more. These strategies provide rich opportunities both in and beyond the classroom so every student can develop their talents and reach their full potential.

Our approach focuses on four key domains:

Intellectual

We offer personalised learning that meets students at their current level, understanding that hospital routines and individual needs can affect how they learn. We adjust the pace, content, and style of lessons to keep students curious, growing, and progressing.

Physical

Recognising the importance of physical development, by providing students with support in maintaining and building their overall health and wellbeing.

Creative

We provide opportunities for students to develop innovative thinking and artistic expression, encouraging originality and problem-solving through diverse creative activities.

Social-Emotional

We prioritise emotional safety, comfort, and connection for students navigating hospital environments and significant health challenges. We foster positive relationships with peers, staff, and families to ensure every child feels seen, supported, and valued.
