At John Hunter Hospital School, we nurture successful pathways for all through innovation, collaboration, and excellence.
The John Hunter Hospital School provides access to curriculum and wellbeing support, for young people in Kindergarten to year 12. Our students may be admitted to hospital due to illness, accident or trauma, mental health or for medical procedures. We also provide support to siblings of young people receiving care. The school works with a wide range of stakeholders including medical, allied health, families/carers, community partners and census schools.
Our school service has 5 educational sectors
- The school room on the Paediatric and Adolescent medical wards.
- Ward Teaching across John Hunter Paediatric and Adolescent Health Wards.
- Nexus Education at the Nexus Child and Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit.
- Kolang Kumba Outreach Class at Wirrapang School.
- Maitland Outreach Class at Maitland Paediatric and Adolescent Health Wards.
The school's central purpose is to provide an engaging, stimulating and supportive environment, assisting students maintain educational continuity and experience a smooth transition back to their census school. For students who are hospitalised for extended periods, a planned and supported transition program is offered.
