School Room
The John Hunter Hospital School is a Kindergarten to year 12 wrap around service catering for students social, emotional and academic wellbeing. In class, students engage in a trauma-informed program, aligning with the NSW curriculum whilst also working from their census schools. Our highly experienced staff ensure students are still connected to home through collaborations with their census school teachers and further are provided opportunities to virtually connect with school through class robots. The education team work daily alongside the health staff to ensure the educational access for each young person is individualised.
Students' wellbeing is paramount in our space with teachers implementing a range of evidence based pedagogy techniques to engage a variety of learners.
Ward Teaching
John Hunter Hospital School provides an educational service to students unable to access the classroom for medical reasons. These one-on-one sessions cater for individual needs with a focus on literacy, numeracy and wellbeing. Young people can be located within the pediatric wards, admitted as an outpatient, or even staying at Ronald McDonald house. The school sessions are often a highlight in their day as school is one of the few non-medical experiences they have in hospital. It is lovely to greet our young people when we arrive with our trolleys of activities. A key role of the ward teacher is to facilitate and provide support to ensure a successful transition back to their local census school.
